The My Dear Daughter campaign to End FGM in Kenya
Launched in 2025, the My Dear Daughter Campaign will drive action at both the Kenyan and global levels to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and protect millions of women and girls at risk of this form of gender-based violence. Ending FGM requires concerted efforts and therefore the need to bring on board Elders, Survivors/Mothers and the Young People. These three pillars of interest represent the metaphorical African traditional three-legged stool that symbolizes unity, stability and interdependence. They represent the commonalities and stable foundations of three essential parties working together upon which if one is removed the entire structure collapses. The role of these pillars is as follows:
Leg One: Men as custodians of culture
Men’s voices shape norms. They hold majority of decision-making position and wield overwhelming influence at house hold and community level. They are the gate keepers of the community culture; they promote social continuity and cultural identity. When they rise to protect girls, culture shifts. When they declare “Not my daughter,” a new future becomes possible.
Leg Two: Mothers as survivors turned protectors
Mothers who endured FGM know the pain and the lifelong cost. Their courage and love give them the power to say: “This ends with me because my daughter will not suffer what I suffered.” When mothers declare not my daughter a new future with possibilities becomes realistic.
Leg Three: Youths as the generation that will end FGM
Young people are the force of a new era. They are open to new ideas, influenced by role models and figures around the world and ready to give their allegiance and passion to issues they see and reflect modernity. They are inquisitive, confident and a vibrant generation. Youths are full of energy, potential and aspirations and can lead the way in speaking out for change and new order. Their voices, dreams and determination form the generation that will end FGM once and for all.
The sitting area of the stool is government/CSOs, NGOs holding the three pillars together and supporting them.
Ending FGM Within 5 Years
The campaign sets an ambitious goal to end FGM in Kenya by 2030 and uphold the dignity, safety, and rights of all women and girls. By raising awareness, strengthening community engagement, and mobilizing both Kenyan and global support, we aim to eliminate a harmful practice that violates human rights and fuels gender-based violence.
Together, we can protect the dignity of women and girls and make the world a safer place for all.
Join the Commitment
This campaign invites mothers, elders, fathers, brothers, survivors, uncles, aunts and everybody to publicly commit to abandoning FGM and protecting girls’ rights to bodily integrity, education and dignity. This platform is a space for all to register their commitments to SAYING NO TO FGM.
Let us all commit to safeguarding our dear daughters and ending FGM for good.
